It's been a long time since my last book review. Not that I wouldn't have read in the meantime, but somehow nothing inspired me to write a review. Now this book I read, no - devoured, gets me back on the writing track. I read it in a few weeks, but remember it was in German and has over 600 pages.
The previous resident of our current apartment had left this book behind, so I picked it up in search of something to read before I could get a library card. I quickly became fascinated with the four adult sisters that have only their father in common. After the father has a stroke and is paralysed, the sisters come together and live for a while in their childhood home, not looking for companionship but finding it anyway in their sisters. The women become close again, and past secrets are revealed. All this time the father lies in coma in a hospital.
When I go to Finland, I always manage to grow my stash substantially. This time was no exception. Let me show you the gorgeous yarns and wools.
* Tässä olisi Suomen lankahankinnat! Ensinnä Villa Laurilan lankoja *
First, I ordered some locally, small-scale produced wools and yarns from Villa Laurila. I got yarns and wool for spinning (and a drop spindle!) from near-extinct Kainuunharmas-sheep and Ahvenanmaa's sheep. They are so cool and you can really notice that they're not industrially processed.
I also odered a spindle, and wool from the same rare breeds to go with it!
There's also other lovely yarns I got - see them after peressing Read more.
* Read moren jälkeen on vielä lisää lankoja! *
I was very lucky to have some holidays before I move into my new job (next week!) and after I sorted out all settling-in matters in Germany I was free to go to Finland, my home country, for a week.
It was as usual very beautiful, and I enjoyed meeting my friends and family again.
I arrived on Wednesday evening very late, and Thursday I relaxed, but on Friday I got a chance to go to Tampere and meet my friends from the polytechnic university days. I met a lot of people, but also got a chance to have a cup of vanilla coffee and some mud cake in my all time favourite café, Vanha Vanilja.
* Vanha Vanilja on ihanin kahvila koko maailmassa (tai ainakin niistä kahviloista joissa olen ollut maailmassa. *
Even during the move and all the hassle I have been knitting some socks.
* Muutto oli rankka, mutta sain sentään jonkin verran neulottua sen aikana - lähinnä sukkia. *
First, I had to finish the socks for Nick's mom, which I started in May and planned to give her for her birthday in August. However Nick went to visit his parents this weekend, so the socks had to be ready by Thursday. I actually finished them very quickly after I got the inspiration. The first sock wasn't very exciting for some reason - maybe because I've knit this pattern before and the fascination of something new wasn't present. The second was more fun.
It's happened, I left Ireland and have pretty much settled into Essen , a beautiful city in Nordrhein-Westfalen (often shortened as NRW), Germany.
The move was quite easy looking back, me and Nick were able to share the workload and everything worked out fine. I even got most of the needed documentation already, and most of the tasks done (register as resident, open bank account...) . The weather was gorgeous for the first few days, but lately it's been rainy again. I hoped to escape bad weather when leaving Ireland, but that hasn't happened yet unfortunately. Luckily I was in Finland for a week, where the weather was a bit nicer (I'll post separately on that).
