Sudan is an extremely war-torn country, and that for a long time. The current genocide in Darfur, before that the Second Sudanese Civil War, in which over 2 million people were killed have made it difficult for the Sudanese people to go on living normally, like sending their children to school.
I'm on holidays with Nick in Finland, and will be returning to normal life and blogging in some days. But not yet! So I will just wish you all a very merry and beautiful Christmas!
Once I return, there'll be quite an interesting knitalong/crochet-along for Darfur - please check back before New Year's for details!
I'm no vegan, but I do try to avoind buying new leather clothes or shoes - basically anything that requires killing the animal to make the product. That's not always easy, but once again I noticed it's not impossible.
I was looking for pretty, warm winter shoes without leather, and had looked at at leat 5 shops already (and slowly giving up hope) when I went (well, actually Nick suggested that I go there) to the local warehouse Galeria Kaufhof, and against all odds found some gorgeous shoes, not only one pair but many to choose from. I tried them all on, thought about it for a couple of days and went back to buy these beauties!
Finally a book review again! I have been reading a lot, but mostly German books where I dodn't know if there's an English translation available or not. This book I know is originally in English, so even though I read it in German I can blog about it in English.
Geisha, a life is the true story of Gijon geisha Mineko Iwasaki. She was the person who helped the author Arthur Golden in writing the Memoirs of a Geisha, a book that claimed to tell the truth about Gijon geisha life. However, Golden had made some things more "interesting" so Ms. Iwasaki decided to write her own book, with her own name.
Today we went to the "big wheel", the "Bellevue Riesenrad" at Essen centre. It was really expensive, 4,50 per person, but I would say it was worth it. The day was clear, the sun was slowly going down, and the wheel was really big! That means we could really see far away!
It's amazing how here, in the middle of Ruhrpott, you see city landscape everywhere: industry, buildings, and little strips of forest. You can clearly see that millions of people live in this area. But it's still beautiful.
In the first photo you can see the Essen Rathaus (City hall) and the wheel, the second picture is an impression of the city.
After a long break I've started a project that isn't
a) charity
b) small or
c) for someone for Christmas
This is the Versatility multifunction-knitted-item from Knitty.
I'm using a yarn from my stash, Marika Moon merino and modal (does anyone know what that is?), size 6mm Knitpicks needles, and I'm making the pattern as advised, just leaving out the bobbles. It's actually far further now as in the pic, it's really addictive and I knit it every day! Hope to have it done by Christmas!
